Structural Checks
Understanding the ACI 318-19 structural verification results.
Structural Checks
Cimbra verifies every design against ACI 318-19 with four categories of checks. Each is displayed in a collapsible accordion section.
Moment Analysis (ULS)
Ultimate Limit State flexural check at multiple points along the span.
- Diagram: Design moment envelope vs. flexural capacity (Mn)
- Table: Position, Mu, Mn, utilization ratio (Mu/Mn), and pass/fail at each point
- Pass criteria: Mu ≤ φMn at all points (utilization ≤ 1.0)
The controlling section — the point with the highest utilization — is highlighted in yellow.
Shear Analysis (ULS)
Ultimate Limit State shear check at multiple points along the span.
- Diagram: Design shear vs. shear capacity (Vn = Vc + Vs)
- Table: Position, Vu, Vn, utilization ratio, pass/fail
- Pass criteria: Vu ≤ φVn at all points
Vc is the concrete contribution, Vs is the stirrup steel contribution based on the optimized stirrup spacing.
Deflection Analysis (SLS)
Serviceability Limit State deflection check.
- Deflection profile: Continuous curve from support to midspan
- Key values: Total deflection, deflection limit (L/360 by default), ratio
- For prestressed designs: Shows initial camber and net deflection after losses
- Pass criteria: Total deflection ≤ span / deflection limit
Serviceability Stress Checks (SLS)
For prestressed designs only — verifies concrete stresses against ACI 318 limits at three load stages:
| Stage | What's Checked | ACI Reference |
|---|---|---|
| At release | Top and bottom fiber stress under prestress + self-weight | §24.5.3 |
| Sustained loads | Stress under sustained (dead + superimposed) loading | §24.5.4.1 |
| Total loads | Stress under full service loading (dead + live) | §24.5.4.1 |
Each location shows the computed stress, the ACI limit, and pass/fail status.
Utilization Colors
Throughout the results:
| Color | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | Pass — utilization ≤ 1.0 |
| Yellow | Controlling — highest utilization (still passing) |
| Red | Fail — utilization > 1.0 |
